Volokh Has this peice on Congress considering a day of prayer and fasting. While I am in no way a supporter of the separation of Church and state argument, I do believe there is a role for religion in government, as long as government isnt making law in regards to religion, this is absolutely silly. It is more symbolic do nothing legislation that is intended to give some people a warm fuzzy feeling and pass the time.
Why dont they review some judicial nominations or something? Maybe they could pass some sensible laws regarding national security. I think this is symptomatic of our governments fatal illness, we are no longer concerned with real issues, or real problems. We just concentrate on symbolic actions and doling out the tax payer funds.
